I first discovered the Southern African concept of ubuntu after hearing Archbishop Desmond Tutu talk about it. It is essentially a belief that all people are inexorably linked together because of our shared humanity.

Chris Abani, a novelist and poet, was imprisoned by Nigerian authorities three times. In his TED talk, he talks about ubuntu, the nature of humanity and his mother’s influence.
